Granite vs. Quartz Countertops: Which Is Right for You?

Choosing between granite and quartz is one of the biggest decisions homeowners face during a kitchen or bathroom remodel. Both materials are beautiful, durable, and add significant value to your home. But they have distinct characteristics that may make one a better fit for your lifestyle.

Granite: Nature's Masterpiece

Granite is a 100% natural stone, quarried from the earth and cut into slabs. Each piece is truly one-of-a-kind, with unique veining, crystal structures, and color patterns formed over millions of years.

Pros of Granite

  • Unique beauty — No two slabs are identical
  • Exceptional heat resistance — You can place hot pots directly on the surface (though we still recommend trivets)
  • Extremely durable — Rates 6-7 on the Mohs hardness scale
  • Adds home value — Premium natural stone is always a selling point
  • UV resistant — Won't fade in sunlight, making it suitable for outdoor kitchens

Cons of Granite

  • Requires periodic sealing — Once or twice a year depending on usage
  • Porous — Can absorb liquids if not properly sealed
  • Variation — What you see in a sample may differ from your actual slab

Quartz: Engineered Perfection

Quartz countertops are engineered stone, made from approximately 90-95% natural quartz crystals bound with resins and pigments. This manufacturing process allows for incredible consistency and a vast array of colors.

Pros of Quartz

  • Non-porous — Never needs sealing
  • Consistent patterns — What you see is what you get
  • Low maintenance — Simply wipe clean with soap and water
  • Stain resistant — Resists wine, coffee, and oil stains
  • Wide color selection — Can mimic marble, concrete, and other stones

Cons of Quartz

  • Less heat resistant — Always use trivets for hot cookware
  • Can discolor in direct sunlight — Better suited for indoor use
  • Seams may be visible — Especially in lighter colors

Which Should You Choose?

Choose granite if you want a truly unique, natural look, plan to use it outdoors, or love the character that comes with natural variation. Granite is also the better choice if you frequently place hot pans on your counters.

Choose quartz if you want a low-maintenance surface, prefer consistent color patterns, or desire a wider selection of colors including options that mimic marble without the upkeep.
